• I heard from a friend of mine a few days ago about the official timekeepers were adding an additional second to New Years Eve Day, so we will have to wait an extra second before shouting out, “Happy New Year,” kissing some strangers and swigging down over priced, cheap champagne. Okay, that is what I did last night.

Anyway, I find this story interesting and cool; however, it didn’t seem like the rest of the world cared about it. I mean, it isn’t like we let the clock run down to midnight and then, corrected it to that one second. To read more about the story Click Here!

  • Anyway, I have been thinking about global warming while I was chipping ice from my car’s windshield and prying open my car doors that were slightly frozen shut. I am sure everyone is aware about the snow, ice and cold that has swept through California the past few days and as a matter of fact it is still cold. Yeah, I know… Californians don’t know cold. Well, for it to dip down into the 30’s with rain turning into ice, is too cold for this transplant and I know cold, I am originally from the Great Diary State.

I don’t recall it being this cold in Southern California. I remember last year going into work at 5am and freezing; however, by the time the sun came out it warmed up to the high 60’s to low 70’s which is perfect. The last few days it is staying in the 40’s to 50’s during the day. Too cold for me. I moved to California to get away from low temperatures. As much as I am complaining about the cold spell here, I am fascinated. I wonder if we will get any more storms similar to the one we just had.

Below, I have some links to stories reporting about the storms. Pretty interesting. In the meantime stay warm, dry and Light’em up!Inland Weather Article

Hey Al! I thought our planet had a fever and we are suffering through global warming. What the hell happened you con-artist? I live in Southern California freezing my butt off, I wish it was global warming, I would enjoy it more than this global freezing.

I just don’t understand how some fools fall for the preaching of the “Almighty Al,” believing he and his so-called scientists know for a fact the Earth is dying from global warming caused by Man but, yet our own weather men can’t predict accurately what the weather will be like the next day.

  • I can’t say I believe in Bigfoot any more, I did when I was kid, 9-10 years old. and I can remember way back then wanting to become a “Bigfoot Hunter,” riding through the forests of North America on horseback, with a rifle, hand gun, sleeping bag and a canteen of water. Hey, I was a kid with a big imagination. Now, I hear a story like this about a rubber ape suit frozen in ice to be used as a hoax and it just confirms it to me that there isn’t a Bigfoot.
Anyway, Click Here to read the story about the frozen ape suit and the other link to check out the Searching for Bigfoot website, SearchingForBigfoot.com And as always… Light’em Up!

Brett Favre returns to Green Bay, unwanted and unloved. As he strolls through the locker room he comes across Aaron Rodgers, his longtime understudy and the man who now holds the job Favre feels is rightfully his.Favre: You better watch your back, young fella. The gunslinger is back in town.

(Rodgers rises from his card game.)Rodgers: Your time has passed, old man. There is a new sheriff in town. I suggest you accept that and deal with it, or you’re in for a world o’ hurt.Favre: You best respect your elders, son. I own this town. Always have, always will.Rodgers: This town has moved on. You’re old. You’re washed up! We don’t want you ’round here no more. And we don’t want your interceptions neither. Get lost, Brett Favre! Go! Or I’ll throw you out. And take that pretty little Deanna with you.Favre: Oh, now you’ve done it, Aaron Rodgers. I tried to do this the nice way. I just wanted to come back here and take what is mine. But now you’ve insulted me. No one does that. Ever. You will pay.

  • Like the title? I was inspired to use it in honor of the TobaccoBarn.com’s new web page of inexpensive cigars and also for some crazy reason I decided to light up a cheap cigar. Who knows, maybe I will make every Friday, a Cheap Cigar Friday. I started to have flash backs of the times I used to work for big companies that had their Dress Down Friday, Haiwaiin Shirt, Casual Day or some lame name that allowed us to get out of dressing in our white shirts and ties. Anyway…

The cigar I decided to light up is an El Camino Dominicano. I tried finding some information on this cigar but, I was unsuccessful. The cigar had a dark brown, very rough looking wrapper. Not very pleasing to the eye but, what the heck… I lit it up just to try it out. It has been sitting in my humidor for over a year now and it is one of these cigars I will smoke when doing yard work. Let me tell you, I took a couple of puffs and had to put the thing out. I didn’t like the taste. So, I threw it out and grabbed the Perdomo Fresco Toro.

    Perdomo Fresco Toro
    Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
    Binder:  Nicaraguan
    Filler: Nicaraguan
    Made in Nicaragua

Ah, the Perdomo Fresco is a much better inexpensive cigar. The Fresco is a light cigar but, very tasty. The ash doesn’t hang on for very long which appears to be a very white flaky ash. This cigar is extremely smoky with thick white smoke swirling in the air around my head. I am actually enjoying this cigar while working and drinking a bottle of some fine H2O. For an inexpensive cigar I recommend the Perdomo Fresco. Skip the other one.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

  • First I want to Congratulate the New York Giants for winning the Super Bowl on Sunday. It had to be the best  Super Bowl I have seen in a very long time. Way to Go Giants! Maybe next year Patriot Fans; however, I still give New England praise for having an awesome run. We may not see that happen again for another 30+ years but, I have been wrong before.

Romeo y Julieta Habana Reserve Toro
    Size: 6″ x 56
    Wrapper: Nicaragua
    Binder: Nicaragua
    Filler: Honduras & Nicaragua

Wow! After first light and drag, I could really taste the oils from this cigar. Very Tasty. Chocolate, earthy taste. I would say it is a medium cigar. The ash is flaky, dark gray and seemed to hold on up to an inch in length before falling off. The cigar seems to get a little bit sweeter as I smoke it past the mid-point.  I have to say this is my favorite Romeo y Julieta cigar and I highly recommend this cigar, it is that good. I smoked it right down to the nub.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em!

  • I am watching the Cowboys slaughter the Vikings and thought why not check my email to see if anything interesting came in and I discovered a Google Alert I have set up for Zippos. Low and behold it had a very interesting video. Check it out.

  • Ever since I found out last Spring that Zippo was going to be releasing a new lighter that emits a butane flame for us cigar smokers, I thought WOW! I really want one. I went online to research as much information as possible about the new butane lighter and discovered on some message board, I don’t recall which one as I went through hundreds maybe, even thousands of them to get as much info as I could about the Zippo Blu. Anyway… I found out on one of them that if you submit your information to Marlboro you had a choice between a Zippo Blu lighter or, if I remember correctly, a sleeping bag. I really didn’t pay attention to what the other option was; I was focused only on picking the Zippo Blu lighter. It may have been a million dollars and I still would have opted for the lighter. Okay, that isn’t true… I would have taken the million but, that is neither here nor there. Right after I hit the submit button and received my Thank You message from Marlboro notifying me that it will be another 10 weeks before I get the lighter in my hands, I counted the time on my calendar to get a rough estimate as to when I would see it. According to my estimates I won’t see it until about the middle of October. Then, I thought, the thing is coming from Marlboro and it will more than likely have a Marlboro logo stamped on one side since they are giving them away as a free promotion. What the hell! I didn’t care. Even though I don’t smoke cigarettes, I wanted that Blu lighter. I love Zippo lighters; I am not a big Zippo Collector like some people are as I only have three Zippo lighters. I just love the fact it is a product that is proudly made in the Good Ol’ US of A, a business that has a long history and tradition and in my humble opinion the Zippo is the most reliable lighter around. The only thing that I don’t like about the Zippo is it has to be re-filled with lighter fluid once a week. My favorite butane lighter is my trusty old Vector/KGM Vulcan but, that is another story.
Imagine my surprise when I received a package from Marlboro weeks before I estimated as to when I would get my Blu. I anxiously ripped open the bubble wrap envelope, and dumped out in my hand a card, about the size of a business card and a brown box. I didn’t really bother taking any time looking at the card, I just slid a metal case out of the brown cardboard sleeve and popped open the Zippo Blu tin lid off.

Low and Behold!!! I found a brushed Chrome Zippo Blu lighter. I took it out of the case, took off the back sticker and flicked open the lid to hear that famous Zippo Click. I closed the lid of the lighter and immediately filled it up with Zippo Butane. Let it warm up in my hand for a few seconds, flicked open the lighter’s lid hit the flint wheel and pushed the button that releases the butane gas. I wish I could say I was able to light it up easily but, for some reason it seemed I had to get used to hitting the wheel and then the button. I am used to my old lighter fluid lighters and a few months back I picked up one of Vector/KGM’s Thunderbird butane lighter inserts that fits a Zippo case perfectly. I love the KGM Thunderbird insert not only because it is butane but, it looks like a Zippo insert, unless of course you take a really close look at it.
My first impression with the Zippo Blu I must admit was, “THIS IS AWESOME!” I am sure if  you are like me, have already read on other blogs, message boards or even on Zippo’s website that the Blu is taller and thicker that the lighter fluid Zippos. And, it is obvious the Blu isn’t in a rectangular shape as the Classic Zippos are but, when I first held the Blu it felt heavier to me or, I should say bulkier. It just doesn’t have the same slim, light feeling as a trusty old Zippo lighter has. After using the Blu ligther a bunch of times lighting I was beginning to lose my love and admiration of it. Sometimes, I smoke a cigar while I am working and will at times sit it down for a few minutes to find later when I pick the cigar back up it needs to be relit. At this point I am multi-tasking while attempting to light the my cigar and want to get it done quickly but, the way the Blu’s flint wheel and button are arranged it doesn’t seem to be very practical. And, talk about ergonomics, this lighter won’t even make it at the top of the list. My thumb gets sore because of how the wheel and button are set up. Now, I am not an engineer or even, an inventor for that matter but, I wish Zippo would have designed an ignition system that would work better than it does now. Plus, I don’t know if anyone else is experiencing this or not, but it seems to me the Blu hogs up a lot of gas and there isn’t a flame adjustment on this lighter. I am just spoiled with every other butane lighter has a flame adjustor on it. I find myself either using my Zippo with the KGM butane insert or my old reliable Zippo lighter more often now. I still like the Blu lighter and use it from time to time but, not as much as I thought I would when I first got it in the mail.
    ’nuff said.
  • La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6
    Size: 5-7/8” x 60
    Wrapper: Ecuadoran
    Filler: Dominican & Nicaraguan
    Binder: Nicaraguan
    Country: Dominican
The cigar has a nice looking light brown veiny wrapper. WOW! This cigar has a ton of flavor right after the first light and puff. I am having this cigar after enjoying a small lunch consisting of a homemade taco and chips with salsa. And, my drink of choice today is a Coke. As I am smoking it the flavor seems to mellow out a bit and the burn appears to be a bit uneven. The ash is a grayish black with a hint of a brown color and quite flaky. The ash held up to about an inch. I don’t know why but, lately I have been finding the color of the ash and how long it hangs on pretty fascinating. I have no idea what it all means but, I just like to take note of it. The flavor isn’t has strong as when I first lit the stick but, still a tasty smoke. As I am smoking this large cigar I am finding it difficult to keep lit, keeps going out on me. But then again, I love the taste of good tobacco and end up chomping on the end too much so; I decided to open it up a bit by cutting more of the end off. By looking at the burning end of the cigar I don’t think this one had a tight enough wrap. It looks like the cigar was loosely wrapped that might be why I am having a hard time keeping it lit. I have had this cigar many times before in the past and never had such hard time keeping it lit. I hate to say it, I am getting frustrated with keeping this cigar lit so, I decided to let it go at about half way through my smoke and will grab another cigar.
    Fonseca Cubano Limitado Toro
    Size: 6” x 50
    Wrapper: Honduran
    Binder: Dominican
    Filler: Nicaraguan & Dominican
Dark brown oily and veiny wrapper but, it looks tasty. Again, WOW!!! This cigar has a lot more flavor that punches you right after the first light and draw, very delicious. I won’t recommend this cigar to the faint of heart. I grabbed this cigar because; it was voted Robb Report Best of the Best 2007 according to the Fonseca Rep who came into the Tobacco Barn to put blue ribbons onto the cigar boxes. The ash is a very flaky, dark gray with some black coloring. This cigar started out with a bang but, is starting to mellow out but, still has a lot of flavor. The burn is uneven; however, I am not having any problems with keeping it lit. I highly recommend this cigar if you like a medium to full bodied.

Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.

  • VERY COOL!!! Zippo is releasing a new butane lighter. I subscribe to the CigarCyclopedia.com‘s newsletter and found this article on their website. After clicking on the link to the article you will need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to read it. I found the Zippo Blu website, ZippoBlu.com.  From what their site states we should be seeing them in the USA some time in August or this Fall.

    Zippo back to butane:
As we’ve noted many times before, it’s amazing what you can find on eBay.

Although Zippo is perhaps the most famous name in lighters, it has not been the cigar smoker’s lighter of choice. The famed Zippo lighter developed in 1932 uses fluid, which can influence the taste of a cigar. Butane gas is preferred by cigar lovers and Zippo has heard the call.

A new design called the Zippo BLU is currently available in Europe and will be introduced to the U.S. later this year. It not only uses butane, but is Zippo’s first torch-style lighter and has a unique, Zippo-style, single-hand-action flywheel sparker similar to its fluid lighter. The “BLU” name refers to the blue-colored torch flame. http://www.cigarcyclopedia.com/news/news.php?c=journal&id=842.
